"Maybe it’s because respect for women, particularly in certain sectors of the world are still at an all-time low.
We rarely hear of such atrocities in the mainstream western media, but honour killings are on the rise. It’s not just localized to Pakistan of course but Pakistan has a serious problem with this issue, with thousands of Pakistani women falling victim every year (the modest 1,000 victims in 2013 as reported by Pew Research is now a sad figure of the past) and we can only wonder what the number of killings really might be given the fact that so many cases lie undocumented. Pew research has also shown that 83% of Pakistanis support stoning's for adultery.
Whether within Pakistan or elsewhere the issue seems to be predominately about sexual control, the idea of controlling women through their bodies and brains, a heightened misogyny and sexism boosted by a tribal society that ensures the woman conforms to the tribe with her body the point of barter. So whatever she’s doing with it belongs to the tribe and to the family and ultimately, they can kill her and do whatever and submit her.

It’s an ugly fact but increased education isn’t making a bit of difference because the number of honour killings are merely on the up and up. This is because women are improving their lot, challenging the system (male authority), she’s choosing what she wants to do with her life and educating herself and that’s leading to more violence and more killing.
So even though women are changing themselves in these sectors to educate themselves and have decided they won’t take any more, the arguably more important culture that remains stuck in time is the male culture, important I say because they are the ones that are doing the killing..."
