"As one of the most successful women to ever play the male-dominated game of chess, Nazi Paikidze is used to having her moves watched closely.


Her latest has drawn international attention: Paikidze announced last week that she will boycott February’s Women's World Chess Championship in Iran because the players will have to wear hijabs.


Paikidze’s decision will deprive the tournament of one of the game’s brightest stars and biggest draws — the U.S. champion who once told a magazine she would “do everything I can to help more girls get into chess.”


Islamic coverings for women in public — required in Iran and some other nations such as Saudi Arabia — have increasingly become a target for both protests and struggles over Muslim identity. Some activists in Iran have launched online campaigns against the hijab rules, while other women continually test the boundaries by pushing back headscarves to near gravity-defying levels.


“Some consider a hijab part of culture,” Paikidze said in an Instagram post announcing her decision. “But, I know that a lot of Iranian women are bravely protesting this forced law daily and risking a lot by doing so. Benjamin Taylor Violently Sexually Assaults 9 Month Old - Now Charged With Murder In The Child's Death

"RIPLEY, W.Va. - A man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-month-old baby is now charged with murder in the child’s death.


CBS affiliate WOWK reports that 32-year-old Benjamin Taylor was charged with first-degree murder after the girl died of her injuries at a hospital Wednesday. Taylor is the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, but isn’t the child’s father.


A criminal complaint shows the baby, Emmaleigh Barringer, had extensive bleeding. The complaint says the injuries indicated a violent sexual assault, as well as shaking or striking of the face.


The little girl’s family released a statement Thursday that read, in part: “We would like to assure anyone with any doubt that this crime against an innocent child was solely perpetrated by a monster who had disguised himself as a caring and supporting friend..."

"Maybe it’s because respect for women, particularly in certain sectors of the world are still at an all-time low.

We rarely hear of such atrocities in the mainstream western media, but honour killings are on the rise. It’s not just localized to Pakistan of course but Pakistan has a serious problem with this issue, with thousands of Pakistani women falling victim every year (the modest 1,000 victims in 2013 as reported by Pew Research is now a sad figure of the past) and we can only wonder what the number of killings really might be given the fact that so many cases lie undocumented. Pew research has also shown that 83% of Pakistanis support stoning's for adultery.


Whether within Pakistan or elsewhere the issue seems to be predominately about sexual control, the idea of controlling women through their bodies and brains, a heightened misogyny and sexism boosted by a tribal society that ensures the woman conforms to the tribe with her body the point of barter. So whatever she’s doing with it belongs to the tribe and to the family and ultimately, they can kill her and do whatever and submit her.

It’s an ugly fact but increased education isn’t making a bit of difference because the number of honour killings are merely on the up and up. This is because women are improving their lot, challenging the system (male authority), she’s choosing what she wants to do with her life and educating herself and that’s leading to more violence and more killing.


So even though women are changing themselves in these sectors to educate themselves and have decided they won’t take any more, the arguably more important culture that remains stuck in time is the male culture, important I say because they are the ones that are doing the killing..."

The Double Life of Justin Harris Who Killed His Son

"Prosecutor: Man accused of murder in son's hot car death had "double life"


"BRUNSWICK, Fla. -- A Georgia man intentionally left his toddler son to die in a hot SUV as he sought to escape the responsibilities of family life and focus on sexual liaisons with prostitutes and young women - even teenagers - he met online, a prosecutor told jurors as the father’s murder trial opened Monday.


Prosecutors say Justin Ross Harris intentionally killed the boy by leaving him for hours in a vehicle parked outside the father’s metro Atlanta workplace in June 2014. Cobb County prosecutor Chuck Boring said Harris killed his son “in one of the most unimaginable, horrible ways” and didn’t show emotion after the death.


Boring said Harris shed “not a tear” when he was being questioned by police after his son died, and complained to officers.


“Is he screaming, ‘Can I see my son? What is going on here?’” Boring said. “No. He complains that it’s hot in the back of the patrol car...”

"For years, wealthy nursing home operator Philip Esformes seemed to live in perpetual motion, using private jets to travel between his Water Towne Place condominium and his mansions in Miami and Los Angeles.


Now federal authorities are applying extraordinary court pressure to keep Esformes locked in a Flordia detention cell where he awaits trial for allegedly orchestrating an unprecedented $1 billion Medicaid and Medicare bribery and kickback scheme.


"This is the largest single criminal health care fraud case ever brought against individuals by the Department of Justice," Assistant Attorney General Leslie Caldwell said at a July 22 news conference announcing the charges.


From their Lincolnwood offices, Esformes and his father and business partner, Morris Esformes, took in millions of dollars annually from federal programs for the sick and disabled.


The new federal indictment alleges that Philip Esformes and a handful of Miami co-conspirators bilked Medicaid and Medicare for 14 years by cyclying some 14,000 patients through various Esformes facilities, where many received unnecessary or even harmful treatments. Drug addicts were allegedly lured to the facilities with promises of narcotics, and prosecutors say some received OxyContin and fentanyl without a physican's order to entice them to stay.


As part of the kickbacks exchanged between Philip Esformes and corrupt medical professionals, the Justice Department alleged, "high-end escorts" were flown to Orlando and chauffeured in limousines for liaisons with Esformes at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel..."
